Instant Memories + Myths

Grandma Faye’s Front Porch.

I’ve started a new project and I am committing to at least 100 images with a Fuji Instax 210 camera I picked up. In short, these big bubbly clunkers are Fuji’s counterpoint to Polariod cameras. The material and texture of the prints are a little different, but in lieu of the dearly departed Polaroid (the 600 was my most recent) this thing does the trick.

I am becoming increasingly aware of my time and how I spend it, what I see, and who I spend it with – and without. I am also defining for my own terms how a single still image can, at the same time, be pure truth, and also build biographical myths about one’s life. The medium of instant film gives me a way to celebrate my time with good people and manifest memories for myself – concurrently truthful ones and mythical ones.

Here’s to at least 100 good ones. Check them out: toddroeth.com/instax/. More soon I hope.
